Over Half of Tourists to Bali are Domestic, Asians growing market share

Wednesday September 20, 2006

The long expected  month of August, which is the usual tourist peak season for Bali, has this year, unfortunately, fallen flat as total foreign arrivals totaled 118.104, or down -24.88% compared to August last year, reports balidiscovery.com.

Comparing month-on-month this decline comes on top of corresponding drops in arrivals for July 2006 (down -23.01% compared to July 2005) and for June (down -19.58% compared to June last year). These figures provide strong evidence that Bali 's tourism recovery seems to have well and truly stalled, says balidiscovery.com editor.

Although still lagging, but less depressed, are arrivals from
Europe , the and ASEAN.

In an earlier report, balidiscovery.com found that total foreign arrivals to Bali in the first seven months, from January-July 2006 totaled 674,561 – a drop of -20.39% from the same period in 2005.

• The Asia Pacific Region (excluding ASEAN) arrivals during the first seven months of 2006 totaled 374,431 – a number that is down -26.64 from the same period last year. and , however, remain the worst affected markets in producing tourists to Bali

• ASEAN arrivals are down -9.45% for the first seven months of 2006. Due to the advent of low-cost carriers in the region, ASEAN arrivals have become a major source of business to Bali , operating at levels almost 3 times higher than 5 years ago.

• Arrivals from the (both North and South America ) are down -21.19% for January-July 2006 from that period in 2005 but, at the same time, exhibit signs of steady recovery.

• European arrivals are still down -8.8% for January-July 2007 from one year before. European arrivals are showing definite signs of growing strength, far ahead of the pace demonstrated in 2003 after the first Bali bombing.

57% of Bali Visitors are Domestic Tourists

Meanwhile the domestic market to
Bali is outpacing the growth of international markets.

Figures demonstrate that the international inbound market to
Bali now represents an average 42.4% of total arrivals to Bali for June-July 2006. By comparison, the domestic market share is 57.6%.

Far and away,
Bali 's most important source of business now are domestic visitors from Indonesia's other 17,507 islands, especially from Jakarta and Java.
